Finally someone said it! This week marked an official Twitter revolution, earning the heterosexual community the recognition it so deserves. On June 29, #HeterosexualPrideDay became a top trend on Twitter, and I became exhausted. Naturally, Pride Month – which is happening right now – is a crucial part of LGBTQ+ community history. It commemorates the Stonewall Riot, a monumental 1969 protest that launched the fight for equal rights. Those riots began because LGBTQ+ individuals were being persecuted for being themselves. Throughout history, this community has been subjected to violence, incarceration, and even murder simply for existing. On June 28, 1969, a brave group of people in NYC said, “No more.” Every year since, the LGBTQ+ community has seized June as an opportunity to live proudly, to be visible, and to continue to march to equality.
Heterosexuality has never been regarded as sinful, abnormal, or abominable. Heterosexuals have never been oppressed for this aspect of their identity. They don’t need a month or a day to be prideful because they can behave this way every day without shame. This might seem like common sense, but plenty of those participating in the #HeterosexualPrideDay trend on Twitter don’t seem to understand what’s wrong with recognizing straight pride. At this point, you have to laugh, right? That’s why we’re just going to drop in a bunch of hilarious reactions to the hashtag and call it a day.
