Happy August! I can’t believe it’s the last month of summer. But I’m determined to make it count. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably already noticed this book popping up on Insta Stories. It’s called The Miracle Morning. And it’s made me a more productive morning person.
What is The Miracle Morning?
I’ll admit, when I first read the cover I was petrified. I am not a morning person. I love sleeping in. Why would I attempt to read a book that promises to transform your life before 8am? Well, this summer, I’ve been experimenting with various self improvement methods. I’m trying to be more open and I’ve been doing everything from more traditional exercise to more spiritual dusts. So when a couple of friends suggested I read this life changing book I figured I should at least make an attempt.
The Miracle Morning is a self improvement book that gives you easy to follow methods for bettering every aspect of your life. It teaches that you that if you wake up just an hour earlier each day, you can create a productive, rewarding and loving life… and be the best person you can be.
It took me less that a week to read the book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The author, Hal Elrod, writes in a modern tone with inspiring examples of how he’s used his method to help himself and others. After reading the book, you’re encouraged to begin a 30 day challenge. That’s where I am this week.
The 30 Day Challenge
The 30 day Miracle Morning challenge is, like it says, a month long exercise to help you become a better person. You wake up an hour earlier than usual and complete six exercises for your mind and body: meditation, visualization, affirmations, exercise, reading and journaling. Each exercise is supposed to be done for 10 minutes each. Although I missed one morning, and have cut down the times of each exercise a couple of mornings, overall, the tasks are pretty doable!
What I’ve learned so far in my challenge
The book encourages you to have an “accountability partner.” This is a person in your life who is also doing the challenge who helps you work through the steps. My friend Stephanie is my accountability partner. It’s actually been really fun. We text good morning “You got this girl!” messages. We send each other inspiring quotes throughout the day. And we even had a wine night where we tore through magazines creating vision boards. Having an accountability partner has deepened my level of friendship.
Another lesson I learned is that even if you’re not a morning person, you can become one. I now find myself excited to wake up in the morning to start my day. I feel so incredibly productive knowing that I’ve done things that better my mind and have gotten through all my emails my 9am.
My Likes and Dislikes
My favorite part is the journaling. I miss writing and I love jotting down my thoughts and coming back to them later.
My least favorite part is the meditation. Even with Yoga Girl’s tips, I still have trouble meditating. A friend recommended an app called Simple Habit, which has made it a little easier. They have 5-15 minute meditations that are targeted to your mood.
As for the reading part, I’m still re-reading The Secret. I now read a few pages at night before bed as well as in the morning. If you have any other self-improvement books you’d recommend, please let me know!
My biggest test starts today, since I’m flying to New York. Luckily I’m going with my accountability partner so hopefully we can encourage each other to continue The Miracle Morning while traveling. I’ll let you know on Insta Stories how it goes!
And with that I leave you with the first two sentences of my new daily affirmations:
I am just as worthy, deserving and capable of achieving everything that I want, in every area of my life, as any other person on earth.
The only thing that separates me from the most extraordinary life I can imagine is my level of commitment to becoming the person I need to be to achieve everything I want.
