President Donald Trump has a new favorite lie and no, it has nothing to do with the election this time. Lately, Trump’s boasted that he’s passed more laws than any other president – except for former President Franklin D. Roosevelt. However, at a rally on June 22 in Iowa, Trump stopped himself from repeating the full lie – and Seth Meyers of Late Night With Seth Meyers noticed.
Trump first made the claim first stated during the bizarre cabinet meeting on June 12 where members praised Trump for his leadership. He said, “Never has there been a president, with few exceptions – case of FDR, he had a major depression to handle – who has passed more legislation and who has done more things than what we’ve done.” This is patently untrue – but more on that later.
At the Iowa rally, Trump almost started to repeat the same lie – except he caught himself and tried to make it clear he didn’t know how true it actually was. “We’ve produced so much legislation – I don’t think any president – it could be somebody. I have to be a little careful because they’ll say he lied. So few presidents – just have to be a little careful cause they’ll say headline “Donald Trump lies to the people of Iowa.” Meyers jokingly suggests that wouldn’t be much of a headline. “You think it’d be a headline if you lied? It would be a headline if you didn’t.”
However, as NPR points out, Trump’s signing of 39 pieces of legislation five months into his presidency isn’t the biggest compared to previous presidents – nor are any that significant. For example, one law just named a courthouse in Nashville, TN, as the Fred D. Thompson Federal Building. Watch the full clip above to see Meyers call Trump out and further discuss how hypocritical Republicans are about the healthcare bill.
